India, the place of Mother Worship

“It is in India”, wrote Sister Nivedita, the  disciple of Swami Vivekananda”that this thought of Mother has been realized in its completeness”.  In Sri Ramakrishna we see this completeness of Mother-worship.  Jesus said,” I and My Father are one.”  Ramakrishna spoke like a child, “I and My Mother are one.”  This total identification with the Cosmic Power revealed superhuman dimensions of the Mother in the life of Her child, Ramakrishna.  Persons who were with him, used to see visions of Mother in him.  Mathurnath, the rich son-in-law of the founder of the temple  saw a vision of Mother Kali and Lord Shiva walking through the body of Ramakrishna.  The young disciple Rakhal  had a strange vision of a girl-like Mother Kali coming out of the body of Ramakrishna and dancing around the room.  Bhiravi Brahmani said,” I mistook him very often for Sri Radharani when I saw him plucking flowers in that manner.”  The lady members of Mathunath’s house considered Ramakrishna as one of them.  ‘ As they looked upon me as a woman-friend of theirs, they did not feel uneasy at all’, said the Master.  Once Ramakrishna’s disciple Girish Chandra Ghosh asked him,” Sir, are you a man or woman?”  Ramakrishna laughed and said in reply, “I do not know.”

Ramakrishna himself had the vision of Radha who appeared before him with a bright yellow splendour.  In Panchavati he had the vision of Mother Sita who merged into him.  Thenceforward Ramakrishna’s smile always had the touch of Sita’s pathos, which he himself admitted.  While he was doing Tantric sadhana, he had visions of many forms of the Mother.

Swami Vivekananda said to his disciple Nivedita,”The future will call Ramakrishna Paramahamsa an incarnation of Kali.  Yes, I think so.  There is no doubt that She worked up the body of Sri Ramakrishna for Her own ends.”  Through Mother-worship Sri Ramakrishna raised the “Brahma Kundalini” of the modern world.  Swami Vivekananda says that by the advent of Ramakrishna, the  great flood of divinity and purity have influenced the whole humanity in the deeper levels of individual mental levels.

I wish and pray that Mother awakens our coiled up energy and rise our spiritual consciousness.
